Introduction: Managing Rivers with Broad Historical Changes and Human Impacts

چکیده

Growing concerns over global environmental change, water resources, river restoration, and sustainable river management are focusing attention on the human dimension of fl uvial systems. This GSA Special Paper presents a set of studies and interpretations of river-channel change that refl ect modern viewpoints of river management in the twenty-fi rst century. It seeks to bridge a rich body of literature borne of late-twentieth-century river studies based in classic concepts of fl uvial geomorphology with modern studies of river management and restoration, integrated watershed science, modern fl uvial geomorphology, and historical channel-change reconstructions. Collectively, the papers document or recognize extensive changes to fl uvial systems over a prolonged period, present analytical methods that can be used to examine and understand fl uvial systems, and examine or recommend policies for river management and restoration.

Historical channel changes in the lower Yuba and Feather Rivers, California: Long-term effects of contrasting river-management strategies

Hydraulic gold-mining tailings produced in the late nineteenth century in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California caused severe channel aggradation in the lower Feather and Yuba Rivers. Topographic and planimetric data from historical accounts, maps, topographic surveys, vertical sections, aerial photographs, and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data reveal contrasting styles of channel ch...

Anthropogenic Changes to the Hayman Area

The rivers of the Front Range are dammed and diverted to provide water to the surrounding regions, and they are constricted by roads and railroads, stocked with fish, polluted by mining wastes and urban runoff. Historical Impacts on River Fauna, Shifting Baselines, and Challenges for Restoration

A human populations modify the landscapes and eco systems they inhabit, whether by direct exploitation of natural resources or through activities such as damming rivers or introducing alien species (Reynolds et al. 2001, Olden et al. 2008). Although less technologically advanced societies can affect their environments profoundly over time (Pinnegar and Engelhard 2008), especially when colonizin...

Typology of historical sources and the reconstruction of long-term historical changes of riverine fish: a case study of the Austrian Danube and northern Russian rivers

Historical data are widely used in river ecology to define reference conditions or to investigate the evolution of aquatic systems. Most studies rely on printed documents from the 19th century, thus missing pre-industrial states and human impacts. This article discusses historical sources that can be used to reconstruct the development of riverine fish communities from the Late Middle Ages unti...

Hydrology and the ecological quality of Scottish river ecosystems.

Hydrology is a primary control on the ecological quality of river systems, through its influence on flow, channel geomorphology, water quality and habitat availability. Scottish rivers are widely perceived to be of high ecological quality, with abundant flow volumes and high water quality. However, historical and current river flow regulations, and land use change have altered the physical and ...
